Services Available From The Practice

All GP’S are contracted to provide “essential services” which is the basic treatment of ill people.

We also provide the following “additional services”:

• Child Health Surveillance – with the health visiting team.
• Routine immunisation of children –with the health visiting team.
• Maternity services in the antenatal and postnatal period with the midwives from the Vale of Leven Hospital.
• Immunisation for adults in relation to travel. Not all travel immunisations are available on the NHS, please ask the receptionist for further details.
• Cervical Smears.
• Freezing of warts and other small skin lesions.

We also hold contracts with Greater Glasgow & Clyde for the following “enhanced services”:

• Annual flu immunisation programme to protect the elderly and those at risk.
• Regular monitoring by bloods and urine tests for patients on a range of drugs.
• Annual comprehensive reviews for patients with Heart disease.
• Annual comprehensive reviews for patients with Diabetes: this includes appointments with the dietician and podiatrist.
• A methadone substitution programme for patients with drug abuse problems.

Antenatal

Friday 14:00 - 16:00

This is a midwife run clinic. When you become pregnant you will be given a ‘booking appointment’ at which the midwife will ask you a few questions and carry out some general health checks. You will be given advice about your choice of place for delivery. You will be seen regularly throughout your pregnancy either at the Practice, local hospital or both.

Smoking Cessation Classes

Smoking cessation classes are held in Dumbarton Health Centre on a Tuesday evening. Please ask at reception for details and appointments.

Contraceptive Services

The GP's and Practice Nurse are happy to discuss contraception with you. The contraceptive pill (combined or progesterone only), the depo injection and condoms are available from your GP.

Sandyford Clinic

The Sandyford Clinic offers more specialist services, such as the implant (Nexplanon) or fitting of coils.

The local service is located in the Vale of Leven Hospital (Mondays & Wednesdays). However, there are many other centres. Please see their website for further details. www.sandyford.org

Emergency Contraception

Please note that emergency contraception (the morning after pill) can be issued by the pharmacist. please visit your local chemist for further details if your require this and they will advise you.

Sister Lynn can be contacted on 01389 811855. She has completed specialist training and can offer advice on Asthma/COPD Diabetes, screening for Diabetes, Epilepsy, travel immunisations, blood monitoring medication, women’s health, Heart Disease and general health promotion.

A full range of leaflets are on display in the reception area and are available free of charge. If you require any specific information which is not available we will endeavour to obtain this for you.

Lifestyle Information     

Smoking  

We are keen to give all our patients who smoke as much help as possible to stop. Please ask at reception or any consultation for information and support.

Walking          

Even the smallest effort can improve your quality of life and make you feel healthier and livelier. As walking is good exercise which most people are able to do, and special equipment is not required, why not get started on your fitness campaign. Simply start by walking 15-20 minutes at a pace brisk enough to get your heart beating faster, three times a week on a regular basis.

When you can easily walk for an hour you are ready to move on to swimming, cycling or running!!

Healthy Eating      

A healthy diet doesn’t need to be a boring diet. Health experts tell us we are all eating too much fat, salt etc but what exactly does all this mean?

Why not speak to your doctor/nurse regarding a healthier diet.      

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the Practice Nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

If you are travelling to Europe the EU has published useful information for travellers on the European website.

Non-NHS Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:

• Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
• Insurance claim forms
• Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
• Private sick notes
• Vaccination certificates

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
